Better lives for animals. Healthier communities for people.

Sustainable Health And Resilient Environments for Development

SHARED works to improve animal welfare across the continent using the One-health approach — because how we treat animals shapes the health and sustainability of our food systems.

The Reality: Africa is home to billions of farmed animals, and that number is rising fast. Livestock production has nearly doubled since 2000. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector on the continent — output has grown more than fivefold since 2000. Populations are growing, diets are shifting, and the industry is trying to keep up. Almost none of this growth has come with welfare protections. Most countries on the continent have no laws governing how farmed animals are raised, handled, or processed. No standards for stocking densities on fish farms. No biosecurity requirements in hatcheries. No framework for humane treatment at any stage of the production chain. As industrial farming methods take hold across the continent without safeguards, the window to set a better standard is closing fast.

What We're Doing About It:

SHARED AFRICA works to get animal welfare onto the agenda before it's too late. We partner with farms, research institutions, and government agencies to build the evidence for better practices and push for regulation that actually gets enforced. We're focused on Ghana for now, but the goal is to build a model that works across the continent.

Featured Projects:

  • FISH FIRST Project

This is our initiative to get aquatic animal welfare written into Ghana's fisheries legislation. Fish are the most farmed and least protected animals in the country, and there's currently no regulatory framework for their welfare. We're working to change that.

  • Pre-slaughter Stunning Regulations

There are currently no species-specific stunning requirements in Ghanaian slaughterhouses. We're working to change that by developing clear guidelines that reduce animal suffering and improve food safety.
